The Sony Playstation 3 is the most talked about game system for 2006. This system won't be hitting stores in North America until November 17, 2006. However, many people are already starting to wonder who is selling PS3, so they can be one of the first to purchase this highly anticipated offering from Sony. Some consumers are going the way of the pre-order. But what exactly is a pre-order and how does it work?

Basically, a pre-order means you're reserving a Playstation 3 for yourself before the release date. Why is this important? Well, because Sony is only distributing a certain number of units to approved retailers and you'd better believe the demand is going to outweigh the supply. There are a variety of places where you can either pre-order your PS3 or take a shot at getting one in person on November 17th.

Toys R Us is one location where pre-orders are being taken, in very limited numbers. So limited that in late October, you could find lines of eager campers anxiously awaiting their chance to place their pre-order. Amazon is another place where you can pre-order, and believe it or not even Ebay sellers are getting in on the Playstation 3 madness. Other retailers approved by Sony to sell consoles and/or pre-orders are Best Buy, Wal-Mart, EB Games, and GameStop. Because the pre-order process has already begun and there are a very limited number of available units for pre-order, you'll be lucky if you are able to get one. Sony has even issued a warning to consumers to watch out for scammers offering pre-orders that they are not authorized to offer. The company advises consumers to stick with the big name stores as those named in this article.

So, if you don't pre-order a unit now, will you still be able to get one? Perhaps. First, you'll need to know who is selling PS3 in your area. Second, you'll need to be there very early on November 17th, and I'll bet you won't be the only one. If you can get a jump on the competition and deal with the mad rush of eager customers that are also desperate for one of these video game systems, you just might end up one of the lucky people who walk out of the store with a Playstation 3!
